Race to Zero – Gdańsk Tech’s actions for climate

Gdańsk University of Technology has published a plan of actions it is taking and is going to take as part of the Race to Zero campaign. The initiative, launched in 2020 by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, focuses on striving to achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

The goal of the global initiative, the Race to Zero campaign, is to unite business leaders, cities, regions, investors and educational and research institutions in striving to achieve zero net greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 at the latest.

The initiative was established in 2020, and was launched by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Since the campaign was launched, the number of Race to Zero members has grown dynamically. Currently, the campaign brings together 13.5 thousand participants from various sectors and regions of the world. There are approximately 10 thousand member companies (including 7,000 from the SME sector), 52 regions, over 1,000 cities, numerous non-governmental organizations, as well as over a thousand educational institutions, including Gdańsk University of Technology. All participants of the campaign have committed to taking specific actions to achieve zero net emissions and promote sustainable development in their organizations.

Gdańsk University of Technology in the Race to Zero

Gdańsk University of Technology is actively involved in the Race to Zero campaign, which it joined in July 2023. The university's activities under the program include the implementation of the tasks included in the Gdańsk University of Technology Climate Plan and in the Strategy for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and the University's Social Responsibility Goals.

The Gdańsk University of Technology Climate Plan is a strategic document that aims to reduce the carbon footprint and implement the sustainable development goals on campus and in the university's activities. The areas in which Gdańsk Tech is implementing activities under the Climate Plan for 2022-2030 are:

  • sustainable use of natural resources and energy,
  • responsible production and consumption,
  • sustainable and low-emission transport,
  • sustainable management of the university campus
  • social involvement.

Gdańsk University of Technology Climate Plan

The Strategy for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and the Social Responsibility of the University Declaration is a document that aims to incorporate the principles of sustainable development and social responsibility into Gdańsk Tech's activities. The document covers 6 areas:

  • responsibility and values,
  • engaged community,
  • equality and diversity,
  • education,
  • activities for the community outside Gdańsk Tech,
  • friendly campus for both people and the environment.

Strategy for the implementation of SDG and DUSR at Gdańsk Tech

The university aims to ensure that the Gdańsk Tech campus is not only a friendly and green place on the Tri-City map for students, employees and residents of the city, but also that it is efficient in terms of energy, heat and water consumption.
