TIG 2024 Conference – Summary

TIG 2024
World-class economists participated in the international scientific conference TIG2024 (Technology, Innovation, and Growth 2024), organized by the Faculty of Management and Economics at Gdańsk University of Technology, led by Ph.D., D. Sc Eng. Aleksandra Parteka, Professor of Gdańsk University of Technology (FME).

On May 23-24, 2024, scientists from over 20 research centers in Europe, the USA, Japan, and China presented the latest research findings on technological connections in the global economy. The plenary lectures were delivered by:

  • Prof. Holger Görg (Kiel Institute for the World Economy, Germany): “Gender Norms and Institutions and the Growth of Female Businesses: Evidence From Trade Data”,
  • Prof. Klaus Prettner (Vienna University of Economics and Business, Austria): “Infection Risk at Work, Automatability, and Employment”,
  • Prof. Francesco Venturini (University of Urbino, Italy): “Unslicing the pie: AI innovation and the labor share in European regions”,
  • Prof. Jakub Growiec (SGH): “Hardware, software, and the future of economic growth”.

The thematic sessions covered the impact of automation and artificial intelligence development on labor markets, the role of technology in economic growth, the development of methodologies for measuring technological progress (including AI), and the dynamics of innovation in companies and regions.

The conference provided an opportunity to strengthen existing scientific contacts and establish new relationships with international partners. The special guest of the conference, Prof. Holger Görg, is the leader of the consortium in the Horizon Europe Rethink GSC project, which includes a team from Gdańsk University of Technology led by Ph.D., D. Sc Eng. Aleksandra Parteka, Professor of Gdańsk University of Technology (FME). (team members: PhD Joanna Wolszczak-Derlacz, PhD Sabina Szymczak, and Piotr Płatkowski, MSc).

During the TIG2024 conference, the OPUS NCN project ("Technological specialization and productivity divergence in the era of digitization, automation, and artificial intelligence.") was also summarized, conducted by, among others: PhD Eng. Aleksandra Parteka, Professor of Gdańsk University of Technology (FME) (project leader), PhD Aleksandra Kordalska, and Zuzanna H. Zarach, MSc. The tangible results of the project include seven publications in renowned economic journals (e.g., Technovation, Technological Forecasting and Social Change, The World Economy, Economic Modelling), with more submissions pending review.

The TIG 2024 conference was organized by Ph.D Aleksandra Kordalska, Igor Niemczyk, MSc, Ph.D. Dagmara Nikulin, and Ph.D., D. Sc Eng. Aleksandra Parteka, Professor of Gdańsk University of Technology (chair of the organizing committee) with support from the Promotion Department of the Faculty of Management and Economics at Gdańsk University of Technology.

The conference was held under the Honorary Patronage of the Rector of Gdańsk University of Technology, Prof. Krzysztof Wilde, the Dean of the Faculty of Management and Economics at Gdańsk University of Technology, Ph.D., D. Sc Małgorzata Gawrycka, Professor of Gdańsk University of Technology, FarU, and the Polish Economic Society.
