The article titled "New challenges, new solutions: How does an IT company navigate in the VUCA era?" by Jakub Majewski, a master's student in Management at FME, and Dr. Eng. hab. Krzysztof Leja, a university professor, was published in the e-mentor journal. We asked Mr. Jakub to tell us more about his research and the conclusions drawn from the analysis of the collected data.

"The article, which I co-authored, was a direct result of my internship at a well-known IT company and reflects my deep engagement and fascination with the dynamic nature of this industry. Collaborating with Professor Krzysztof Leja, I had the unique opportunity to explore how companies can transform volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity – the characteristics of the VUCA environment – into a real driving force for development and innovation. This has become not only a source of valuable knowledge and experiences for me but also an inspiration to further investigate this fascinating topic in my master's thesis, which I am currently working on.

My research began during my studies at the Gdańsk University of Technology, allowing me to gain a solid theoretical foundation and thus continue my education at the prestigious Technical University of Munich (TUM). This combination of experiences from two universities gives me a unique perspective on the future of technology and management.

During my internship, I had the chance to observe firsthand how an enterprise copes with the VUCA world, which allowed me practical experience in solving real business problems. Our article emphasized that success in the VUCA environment depends on the ability to respond quickly, operational flexibility, and effective risk and uncertainty management. By identifying and developing key competencies, companies can transform challenges into opportunities, which is crucial for achieving a competitive edge.

Specific applications of our research findings in business practice include:

  • Development of Adaptive Competencies: Companies should focus on strengthening employees' adaptive skills, enabling them to effectively deal with unexpected changes and exploit new opportunities. This includes promoting a culture open to change and encouraging flexibility in thinking.
  • Strategic Flexibility: The need to quickly adapt processes, organizational structures, and decisions in response to market changes will enable companies to exploit short-term opportunities while maintaining a long-term vision.
  • Effective Risk and Uncertainty Management: Implementing advanced risk management systems that help identify, assess, and minimize potential threats, as well as better predict and prepare for market changes.
  • Promoting Innovation and Continuous Learning: Building a culture that supports innovation and continuous improvement. Companies should invest in developing new technologies and solutions, as well as promote learning and employee development.
  • Strengthening Communication and Collaboration: Developing effective communication and collaboration channels both within the organization and with external partners. Investments in tools and technologies that support information exchange are essential for smooth functioning in the VUCA environment.

The conclusions from our research thus have direct application in management strategies, helping business leaders make informed decisions in a rapidly changing environment.

Personally, this is more than just an academic publication for me; it's a testament to my commitment to understanding and shaping the future. My work highlights how important it is for young professionals to be not just theorists but also practitioners capable of adapting and innovating. I am confident that my research and experiences will inspire others to deepen their knowledge, develop their skills, and take bold steps in their careers.”
